Hardware design and engineering for climate and energy tech

Climate and energy tech has moved past the software-only wave. The next generation of category leaders are hardware companies: battery systems, hydrogen balance-of-plant, EV charging, grid sensing, and industrial heat pumps. That hardware has to survive outdoor deployment, meet certification, and be installable by an electrician or a service technician who has never seen your product before.

Lucent is a hardware design and engineering partner for climate and energy tech companies at exactly that stage. We handle the industrial design and the mechanical engineering under one retainer, and we design against certification and field service from the first sketch.

What you get

Capabilities inside the retainer.

One embedded team, one monthly fee. Scroll through what sits inside the contract, from first sketch to release package.

06 capabilities

  1. 01 / 06

    Battery systems and enclosures

Cell-to-pack enclosures, module trays, and cassette housings for cylindrical and prismatic chemistries. Thermal paths, venting, and busbar routing designed against the safety case, not around it.

  2. 02 / 06

    Hydrogen balance-of-plant enclosures

Cabinet and skid-mounted housings for electrolyzer, fuel cell, and hydrogen storage BOP. Material selection and gasket strategy for hydrogen environments and outdoor deployment.

  3. 03 / 06

    EV charging hardware

AC and DC charging enclosures, cable management, connector housings, and mounting for wall-mount, pedestal, and forecourt installations. Serviceable architecture for a field technician.

  4. 04 / 06

    Grid sensing and monitoring hardware

Pole-mounted, substation, and distribution-level sensor housings with the environmental sealing and mounting flexibility that utility customers actually require.

  5. 05 / 06

Industrial heat pumps and thermal hardware

Cabinet layout, condenser and evaporator housings, and access panels for industrial heat pump and thermal storage products, designed against the real service and installation reality.

  6. 06 / 06

    Certification-ready documentation

CAD, drawings, BOMs, and material declarations prepared for CE, UL, and IEC certification tracks. We coordinate with your test lab and integrate their findings back into the release package.

What does climate and energy tech hardware need from its design partner?

Hardware design and engineering for climate and energy tech has three constraints that most consumer or general-purpose design work does not. The product lives outdoors for a decade. It has to pass a certification body that will read every drawing. And it will be installed by an electrician or a service technician on a schedule, not by an early adopter with a manual.

That means the mechanical architecture, the material selection, and the drawing package all have to be built against those constraints from the first concept. Retro-fitting them at DFM adds cost and slips the certification date. We design against them from the first sketch instead.

How the retainer works.

  1. 0120–30 min

    Intro call

We learn the solution, the stage, and what is blocking you. No pitch, no slide deck.

  2. 022–4 weeks

    Design sprint

A fixed-fee starter project on one clear deliverable, so you see how we work before any ongoing commitment.

  3. 031 session

    Sprint review

We present the work and map the next 90 days together, what to build, what to validate, what to leave alone.

  4. 04Monthly

    Retainer

We scope the real workload and send a proposal for a fixed monthly fee. Embedded team, no time-tracking, cancel with notice.

Common questions.

  • Yes. Cell-to-pack, module tray, and cassette-level enclosures for cylindrical and prismatic chemistries, including thermal paths, venting, and busbar routing. We design against the safety case, not around it.
  • Yes. We prepare CAD, drawings, BOMs, and material declarations to the format your certification body expects, and coordinate with your test lab or NRTL to integrate their findings back into the release package.
  • Yes. Cabinet and skid-mounted enclosures for electrolyzer, fuel cell, and hydrogen BOP, with material selection and gasket strategy scoped for hydrogen environments and outdoor deployment.
  • Yes. Material selection, UV and corrosion strategy, ingress protection, and service architecture all designed against the real deployment reality of climate and energy tech hardware.
  • Yes. We are used to being the mechanical seat inside a climate tech team with strong electrical and firmware. We share CAD through your PDM, lock connector and cable keep-outs early, and stay in the review cadence.
